Experts warned that obesity is putting women’s fertility at risk.

The study in more than 300 women was carried out at the fertility clinic at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

More than a third of overweight and obese women had a miscarriage compared with one in five of normal weight women, a fertility conference heard.

1.All the women had been implanted with a single five-day-old embryo that had been fertilised in the laboratory.
2.Half of them had a body mass index (BMI) of more than 25, which is classed as overweight. Fourteen per cent had a BMI of 30 or more, which is classed as clinically obese.
3.The researchers said there was no difference in egg or embryo quality at the start of the procedure, the European Society of     Human Reproduction and Embryology conference heard.
4.Yet in women with a BMI of over 25 there was a 35% miscarriage rate.
This compared with 21% in women with a BMI less than 25.

Obesity and infertility have been linked together by several studies. But what is the precise relationship between obesity and female infertility? And why do women who are obese have a greater risk of fertility and other pregnancy-related problems?

A person is defined as being obese if thirty per cent of her body weight is made up of fat tissue.

Obesity results in an increased production of estrogen; this hormonal imbalance in turn interferes with ovulation, which of course, is the basis of successful conception.

Obesity poses a greater risk to both maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. Studies show that obesity is associated with adverse consequences like malformation, still birth, gestational diabetes, and the need for a cesarean delivery.
